Victorian Silver Jam Spoon, Levesley Bros, 1897
This is a very attractive Victorian Sterling Silver Jam Spoon with an engraved bowl. It is made by the silversmiths Levesley Brothers in Sheffield and dates to 1897. The Levesley Brothers set up at the Central Works in Sheffield in the early 1860s and remained in business there until around 1920. They are best known for their flatware and cutlery although they did also make some other good quality tableware items.
This lovely jam spoon has a straight stem which is engraved with a scroll pattern for most of its length. The inside of the bowl is beautifully engraved with a floral pattern of two stems crossed at the bottom. Condition is good with just a very slight ding to the tip of the spoon and only superficial surface wear. Nothing you wouldn't expect after over 120 years of use. This Victorian jam spoon is perfectly suitable for use today, makes a lovely decorative piece or would be a good addition to any collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 13.6cm long and weighs a respectable 19.1g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the reverse of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "e" for 1897 and the TL makers' mark for Thomas Levesley of Levesley Brothers.
