Victorian Silver Dessert Fork, London, 1884
This is a lavishly decorated Victorian Sterling Silver Dessert Fork. The fork has extensive and skillful foliate and scroll engraving the full length of both the front and back of the stem, making it a real stand out piece. The initials A K H are elegantly engraved in the cartouche on the front.
The dessert fork was made in London by the renowned firm of Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst and dates to 1884. Founded in 1849, Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst were manufacturing and retail jewellers and silversmiths. Originally based in the City of London, they later moved to Burlington Arcade off Piccadilly and this is the location that they are most associated with. They produced and sold very high quality pieces and numbered Winston Churchill and several Indian Maharajahs amongst their customers.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The fork is 15.4cm / 6ins long and weighs in at a respectable 24.3g / 0.86oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter I for 1884, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the W.W over B.T for Walter Walker and Brownfield Tolhurst who were running Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst at this time.
