Victorian Silver Cream Jug, Chester, 1897
This is an ornate late Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug with a Gilt interior. The creamer has a flat oval base and embossed sides decorated with scrolls and foliage. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug was made by silversmiths Hilliard & Thomason and assayed in Chester in 1897. John Hilliard established his business in 1837 in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Around 1840 he was joined by John Thomason and the firm was renamed Hilliard & Thomason. They were very successful and established a reputation for fine quality small items for domestic, table and personal use. The firm remained in business up until around 1910.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticpate after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 10.6cm / 4.2ins from lip to handle, 5.7cm / 2.2ins across the body and 7.2cm / 2.8ins high to the top of the handle. It weighs in at a very respectable 65.6g / 2.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter O for 1897 and the H & T makers' mark for Hilliard & Thomason.
