Victorian Silver Bread Basket, H. Wilkinson, 1894
Here we have a very good quality large Victorian Sterling Silver Bread Basket. The basket is oval with raised ends. It has a flat base and a reeded body surmounted by a pierced and engraved gallery of flowers and foliage below a rolled rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The bread basket is made by Henry Wilkinson & Co and assayed in London in 1894. Founded in Sheffield in 1831 but descending from various partnerships dating back to the mid-1700s, Henry Wilkinson & Co was a hugely successful firm of silversmiths and electroplaters who exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and opened a London showroom in 1857. They were bought out by Walker & Hall in the 1890s.
Condition is very good with just one ding to the base near the hallmarks and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bread basket is a large size dish measuring 27.5cm / 10.8ins long, 19cm / 7.5ins across and 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs a very substantial 328.6g / 11.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside base are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter T for 1894 and the H.W & Co makers' mark for Henry Wilkinson & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bread basket.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
