Victorian Silver & MOP Butter Knife, B'ham, 1849
This is an attractive early Victorian Sterling Silver Butter Knife with a Mother of Pearl handle. The curved blade is scimitar shaped with scroll engraving along the upper edge. The mother of pearl handle is carved into a double scroll design. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The butter knife was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Foxall & Co and dates to 1849. There is very little information about this company available. They appear to have had a fairly short existence between 1849 and the mid-1850s and their mark is quite rarely seen. They mostly seem to have produced spoons and flatware and decanter labels.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no damage to the mother of pearl and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 175 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 18.4cm / 7.2ins long and weighs in at 45.8g / 1.6oz.
The hallmarks on the silver blade are nice and easy to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter A for 1849, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the F & Co makers' mark for Foxall & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
