Victorian Negretti & Zambra Telescope, c.1880
This is an antique, Victorian marine telescope dating to c.1880.
The tapered brass tube is covered in dark, hard grained Morocco leather in good order. The single draw tube is dent free and inscribed 'Negretti & Zambra, Opticians to Her Majesty, London' and on the reverse the owner's name J.P. O'Neill'.
The optics are in good order offering a clear, crisp image with an inch and three quarter objective glass. The lens cover is present as is the swivel cover in the flared eye cup. The draw tube slides very easily.
Models such as this were referred to as 'Royal Mail' telescopes but were largely employed by the navies (see below).
Dimensions:
Closed Length: 47cm (18.5'')
Fully Drawn Length (incl. sun shade): 63cm (24.75'')
Objective Glass Diameter: 4.5cm (1.75'')
Excerpt from later N&G Catalogue c.1921:
The ''Royal Mail" Telescopes.
These are generally chosen for ordinary marine work, and have been adopted by nearly all the navies and merchant services of the world. The metal used, whether brass or nickel silver is very stout, with a view of producing an article best suited for rough handling. The nickel silver is generally preferred as being more durable than the softer metal. The bodies in both cases are covered with hard grained Morocco leather, all the metal parts being finished bright.
