Victorian Large Silver Sugar Basin, C. Boyton 1873
Here we have a superb quality large Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Basin with Gilt Interior. The sugar bowl is a bulbous oval on a flat base with twin handles, part scalloped body, bands of engraving to the top and bottom and a blank laurel wreath cartouche on each side. This is Victorian copy of a Georgian original.
The sugar basin is made in London by renowned silversmith Charles Boyton and dates to 1873. The first Charles Boyton founded the family business in 1825 and was succeeded by three further generations of Charles Boytons (his son, grandson & great-grandson) until the company hit economic difficulties in 1933. The name was bought and a new company formed, which continued into the 1970s but the Boyton family were no longer involved.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after this period of time. There is very little wear to the gilding of the interior and it looks magnificent. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
As you would expect from Charles Boyton, this is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver. It measures 15.8cm / 6.2ins from handle to handle, 8.9cm / 3.5ins across and stands 9.7cm / 3.8ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 225.9g / 7.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are somewhat rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1873, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the C B makers' mark for Charles Boyton.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sugar bowl.
