Victorian Jersey Spoon & Fork Set, John le Gallais
Here we have a superior quality heavyweight Victorian Sterling Silver Spoon & Fork set in the Albert pattern. Named after Prince Albert, this pattern was introduced in 1840, the year of his marriage to Queen Victoria, and remained popular throughout the 19th century. The initials PMB in a Gothic style are engraved on the underside of both pieces.
The spoon and fork are both well made pieces in a heavy gauge of silver. They are made by John le Gallais on the island of Jersey and assayed in London. The spoon dates to 1856 and the fork to 1858. There is a long history of silver working in the Channel Islands, mostly on Jersey but also on Guernsey. There was no established assay office in the Channel Islands, so a lot of silver used a local form of marking, with more prestigious pieces being sent to London for assay, as in this case. John le Gallais was active between 1831 and 1874.
Condition of both the spoon and fork is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 160 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 17.8cm / 7ins long, the fork is 17.9cm / 7.1ins long and the pair together weigh in at a very substantial 127.9g / 4.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stems are clear to read, although the makers\' marks are a little distorted by the lines of the pattern. The hallmarks show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard\'s head assay mark for London, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JLG in conjoined circles makers\' mark for John le Gallais of Jersey. The spoon has the date letter a for 1856 and the fork has the date letter c for 1858.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon & fork set.
