Victorian Diamond Jubilee Bowl, Birmingham, 1897
Here we have a lovely Sterling Silver Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Bowl. The bowl has a circular base featuring an embossed Diamond Jubilee medallion and the pierced sides have panels featuring the royal coat of arms, the shamrock, rose and thistle for the nations of the United Kingdom, the VRI cypher of Queen Victoria and the dates 1837 and 1897 marking the 60 years of her reign up to that point.
The commemorative bowl was made in Birmingham by Crisford & Norris and dates to 1897. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, royal souvenirs, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the delicate pierced sections and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 12.3cm / 4.8ins across and stands 2.8cm / 1.1ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 41.5g / 1.46oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back of one rib, are small but clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter w, which ran from July 1896 to July 1897, and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris. On the opposite rib there is a registered design number of 293773, which, not surprisingly, dates the original design to 1897.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
