Victorian Cast Silver Buckle, Thomas Hayes, 1898
This is a very well cast late Victorian Sterling Silver Buckle of ornate design. The buckle is made in Birmingham by Thomas Hayes and dates to 1898. Thomas Hayes was a prolific Birmingham silversmith during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Based in Spencer Street, his firm made everything from card cases to oil cans to toast racks. This buckle is a good example of the fine quality of his work.
The buckle is made in a good gauge of silver and is typically Victorian with extravagant decoration of swags and flowers. It has a central bar with three prongs for fastening. It would make a very distinctive addition to a period or modern outfit or a great addition to a collection.
Condition is generally very good but there is one small bit of damage to a circle in one corner. This has been professionally rounded and smoothed at some point in the past so that it does not catch or scratch anything. The fastening mechanism works smoothly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The buckle is 7.7cm / 3" high and 5.2cm / 2.1" wide. It weighs a substantial 43.2g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inner rim are clear to read, although the makers' mark is a little distorted. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "y" for 1898 and the TH makers' mark for Thomas Hayes. In addition there are lion passant and date letter "y" marks on the fastening mechanism and a lion passant on the central of the 3 prongs, so you can be assured the whole piece is made from Sterling Silver.
