Victorian Albert Sifter Spoon, JJ Whiting, 1853 Victorian Silver Sifter Spoon %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an elegant early Victorian Sterling Silver Sifter Spoon in the Albert Pattern. This pattern is a simplified version of the King's Pattern and was first produced in the year of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's wedding in 1840. There is a crest of a dragon's head pierced with an arrow engraved at the top of the stem.

Originally designed for sprinkling sugar onto fruit or desserts, today they are also great for dusting cocoa powder onto a capuccino or hot chocolate or for decorating a cake with icing sugar.

The sifter spoon was made in London by silversmith John James Whiting and dates to 1853. John James Whiting registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1833. He was a specialist spoon and flatware maker and produced pieces of consistently good quality. He remained in business until at least the late 1850s and possibly later.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced bowl and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 170 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The sifter spoon is 16.1cm / 6.3ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 46.1g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J W makers' mark for John James Whiting.
