Three Drawer Brass Telescope by J H Steward c.1880
A fabulous three drawer Victorian telescope made from polished solid English brass, which has just been professionally re-polished to gleam. Signed by J H Steward with the retail addresses " J H Steward, 406-66 Strand, 54 Cornhill, 63 St Paul's Church Yd, London"
It's unusual due to the covering of the barrel with a black woven fibre and a string natural woven cord top and bottom with a tab integrated into each.
The lens has a brass cover and the eye piece has a little integrated shutter to protect the eye hole.
Excellent condition, measuring 6 1/8" in length extending to 16 1/2" in length.
J H Steward - Opticians and scientific instrument makers
James Henry Steward (1817–1896) established J.H. Steward in London in 1852. As “Head Optician”. J.H Steward became incorporated as J.H. Steward Limited on 1st February, 1913. The company produced a large range of items for military use and advertised in their catalogues that they produced instruments for ‘Reconnoitring, Sketching, Night Marching, Signally, Gun Laying’. They were well thought of with their work to such a standard that they were opticians to ‘The British & Foreign Governments, the National Rifle Associations of England, India, Canada & the Colonies and the National Artillery Association.
