Silver Tea Strainer, Lapparra et Gabriel, 1902-23
This is a beautiful early 20th Century French 950 Silver Tea Strainer with a parcel gilt interior to the bowl. The stem is in the thread and bow pattern whilst the bowl has a scalloped rim, zigzag piercings and a central flower motif. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tea strainer is made in Paris by silversmiths Lapparra et Gabriel, sometimes referred to as Maison Lapparra, and dates to between 1902 and 1923. The firm was founded by Antoine Lapparra in 1893. In 1902 he formed a partnership with Georges Gabriel and they became Lapparra et Gabriel. This partnership was dissolved in 1923 and the firm continued under Antoine's nephew Henri. The firm was bought out in 1960 but the Lapparra name still continues today.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, just a very slight curve in the handle and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after around 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tea strainer is 15.2cm / 6ins long and 7cm / 2.7ins across the bowl, which is 2cm / 0.79ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 38.6g / 1.36oz of solid 950 grade silver.
There are silver marks on the rim of the bowl and the heel of the stem where it joins the bowl on the underside. They show the Minerva head mark with the number 1 for 950/1000 grade silver (that's higher than Sterling which is 925/1000) and on the rim the lozenge with the letters L and G either side of a rat, which is the makers' mark for Lapparra et Gabriel in use from 1902-23.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tea strainer.
