We have for sale a very striking and rather unusual Victorian Chester hallmarked silver string holder/string dispenser with scissors my the excellent silversmith Henry Matthews.

This lovely silver hollow ball shaped string holder or string dispenser is beautifully decorated in repousse with a rococo foliate and floral design and is fitted with a pair of scissors in a holder also decorated in the same repousse design. The string holed sits on 3 ball feet and the lid extends to a ball shaped finial with a central hole to allow string to pass through it. The body of the string holder carries full Chester hallmarks for 1895/96 with the makers marks for Henry Matthews, the scissors and holder carry hallmarks for Birmingham 1896/97.

This string holder is 3.25 inches (8.25cm) in diameter and 3.5 inches (8.9cm) high and is in a very good condition, although there is some rubbing to the hallmarks to the base and the scissors holder does show signs of use with some rubbing through in places.
