Silver Capstan Inkwell, Lawrence Emmanuel, 1918 George V Inkwell Lawrence Emmanuel %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a nice quality George V Sterling Silver Capstan style Inkwell with a clear glass well and an inset wooden base. The inkwell is made in Birmingham by Lawrence Emmanuel and dates to the end of World War One in 1918. Lawrence Emmanuel established his firm in the mid-1880s and they remained in business for fifty years until the mid-1930s. The company produced a wide range of desk and personal items and tableware, all of good quality.

This inkwell is in the classic capstan style which remained popular for decades. It has a circular wooden base inset into the silver for stability and sits very securely on a desk top. The inner well to hold the ink is clear glass. It is perfectly usable for anyone requiring liquid ink for calligraphy or just general letter writing or it would be a good addition to a collection.

Condition is good with just a couple of tiny dings around the base and the superficial surface wear you have to expect after over 100 years of service. The hinge to the lid is in good working order and the lid remains open when lifted. The clear glass liner is in very good condition with no cracks or chips. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The inkwell is 8.2cm / 3.25" in diameter across the base and stands 3.6cm / 1.5" high, making it a good size for the smaller desks that we use today. The weight is 93.9g / 3.31oz but this includes the wooden insert.

The hallmarks on the side of the base are a little rubbed but still easy enough to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "t" for 1918 and the LE makers' mark for Lawrence Emmanuel. In addition there is a lion passant and date letter "t" stamped on the inside of the lid and a lion passant stamped on the inner rim of the well.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
