This is a rare and unusual Japaneses Shibayama plaque dating from the mid 19th Century. The plaque is beautifully overlaid with polished shell decoration and depicts a 'Kintaro' swimming down toward a carp. Kintaro is a often translated as 'golden boy' and is Japanese Samurai hero from traditional Japanese folklore. The frame of the plaque is a deep brown red with colouration resembling rosewood.
PROVENANCE:
This was formerly the property of Hermann Gabriel when he was German Consul in Yokohama in 1880, see label to reverse.
This is in excellent order throughout and measures 36 cms in diameter.
