Rare Cased Silver Tea Caddy and Infuser - 1898
This a rare and rather special find for the collector of novelty English silver or Tea Caddies.
The green leather case is gold embossed by the famous top-notch retailer of Leuchars of London and Paris, makers to the Royal family and winning prizes in the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862, winning a further silver medal at the International Exposition of 1867 in Paris the bottom of the sterling silver tea caddy is also engraved by the retailer.
The case is fitted to house the silver tea caddy and the folding silver infuser. The caddy is in beautifully preserved condition with the lavish original gilding present to the interior. The silver is fully hallmarked for London 1898, Victorian in era. The makers mark is also present, struck WS over CS into a quatrefoil for W & G Sissons -Walter & Charles Sissons.
The folding infuser is quite special, the back of the handle marked " Teaette " with the patent number. The handle is unfolded and has a silver sleeve which covers the join to stabilize the handle. there is a screw sleeve that also keeps the infuser closed, once unscrewed and pulled down allows the opening of the hinged infuser. This piece is also hallmarked for London 1898 with the makers mark G G into an oval for George Gilliam .
A superb collectible in excellent condition. The silver caddy measures 2 1/2" x 1 5/8" x 3" tall. The infuser measures 5 3/4" long when extended and the case measures 4" x 2 1/4" x 3 1/2" tall.
