Queen Anne Britannia Silver Table Spoon, 1705
Here we have a very fine Queen Anne Britannia Silver Table Spoon in the Hanoverian with Rat Tail pattern. The spoon has the distinctive Hanoverian upturned end to the stem and the owner's initials G B engraved on the underside. This is because at this time spoons were laid on the table with the bowl facing down rather than up as we do today. The rat tail is an extension of the stem running along the back of the bowl. This is a very early Hanoverian spoon as they only started to appear in England around this time.
The table spoon is made in the higher Britannia grade silver rather than Sterling. Britannia (95.84% pure) was the legal standard for English silver from 1697 to 1720 when it reverted to Sterling (92.5% pure), with Britannia retained as an optional but rarely used alternative.
Condition is extremely good with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected in an item that is over 315 years old! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 19.9cm / 7.8ins long and weighs a very respectable 46.1g / 1.6oz of solid Britannia Silver.
As is often the case with hallmarks on spoons from this period, the marks are somewhat distorted and rubbed. This is because the process of stamping the hallmarks deformed the stem of the spoon, so once returned from the assay office the silversmiths hammered the stems back into shape, deforming the hallmarks in the process. With a little detective work and a magnifier, you can see that we have the Britannia mark for Britannia Silver, the lion's head erased (a heraldic term for a head with no body) assay mark for London and the rather strange date letter K for 1705, which is the clearest of the marks. If there was a makers' mark it has now been rubbed away but there may never have been one.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon.
