Pair of Victorian Silver Salts & Spoons, 1876
This is a top quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Salts & Spoons. The set is made in London by renowned silversmiths Edward Barnard & Sons (creators of the royal Lily Font that now forms part of the Crown Jewels) and dates to 1876.
The salts are round with a beaded rim and stand on three hoof feet. The spoons are in the Old English Bead pattern so they are a perfect match. Down the years so many salts and spoons have become separated that it is always great to have an original matching set.
The salts and spoons are in very good condition with no salt corrosion and just a very slight ding on the side of one salt plus the usual superficial surface wear you would expect to the inside of the salts after over 140 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salts are 5.3cm / 2.25" in diameter and stand 3.2cm / 1.25" high. The spoons are 7cm / 2.75" long. The full set of two salts and two spoons weighs a substantial 84.9g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the bases of the salts and the underside of the stems on the spoons are clear to read with the exception of the makers' marks on the salts which are a little rubbed but still easy to decipher. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "A" for 1876, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the very distinctive J, E, W, J around a B makers' mark for John, Edward, Walter & John Barnard of Edward Barnard & Sons.
