Modernist Silver Sauce Ladle, Sidney Beddall, 1973
This is a very stylish Elizabeth II Sterling Silver Sauce or Cream Ladle in the Modernist style. It has elegant, clean lines with a round bowl and tapering handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sauce ladle is made by the superb silversmith Sidney Beddall of Ambleside in Cumbria and assayed in Sheffield in 1973. Sidney Beddall grew up in Sheffield and was apprenticed at Walker & Hall just after the Second World War. In the early sixties he set up his own business and in 1966 relocated to Ambleside in Cumbria, where he continued working until his retirement in 1995. All his pieces are handmade individually by Sidney Beddall himself. His work rarely comes onto the market as much of it was individual commissions which have stayed within the original families or organisations.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and only the bare minimum of superficial surface wear. This has clearly been a much treasured piece. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 14.5cm / 5.7ins long and weighs a very respectable 31.8g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter F for 1973 and the S.B in a lozenge makers' mark for Sidney Beddall.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
