Large Art Nouveau Silver Vase, James Dixon, 1906
Here we have a superb large Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Trumpet Vase. The vase has a broad circular weighted base from which the fluted trumpet section rises and opens out to a beaded top rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. This is a really exceptional piece.
The vase is made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1906 when Art Nouveau was very much the height of fashion. Founded around 1806 by James Dixon and Thomas Smith, the firm became James Dixon & Sons in 1823. They were a very successful company and remained in business up until the 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is very good with just a couple of tiny dings and one small scratch on the stem of the trumpet, nothing you wouldn't expect after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase is of a substantial size, standing 32.3cm / 12.7ins high and measuring 13.5cm / 5.3ins across the top rim. It weighs in at 642g / 22.6oz but part of this is the weighting material added to the inside of the base for stability. However the vase is still made from a very significant amount of silver.
The hallmarks on the base are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter o for 1906 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £15 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vase and the weight / size of the parcel.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
