Georgian Silver Sauce Ladle, William Eaton, 1832
This is a heavyweight William IV Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle in the classic Fiddle pattern. The ladle is made in London by renowned silversmith William Eaton and dates to 1832. William Eaton was one of the very best specialist spoon makers in the first half of the 19th century, working in London from around 1813 up until the mid-1840s.
As you would expect from William Eaton, this is a very well made sauce ladle in a good heavy gauge of silver. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The ladle is perfectly usable on a dining table today or would make a fine addition to any collection.
Condition of the ladle is very good with no dings or dents and only the most superficial surface wear, rather less than you might expect for an item that's over 180 years old. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 17.8cm / 7" long and weighs a very substantial 72.9g / 2.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "r" for 1832, the George IV duty mark (William IV was King from 1830 but the duty mark didn't change until 1834) and the WE in conjoined circles makers' mark for William Eaton.
