George V Silver Teapot, E.S. Barnsley & Co, 1916

Here we have a distinctive upright George V Sterling Silver Bachelor Teapot. The teapot has a bulbous base standing on four spread feet with a high slender body rising to a scalloped top rim with a rectangular hinged lid. The handle and finial are ebonised wood. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teapot was made in Birmingham by silversmiths E.S. Barnsley & Co and dates to 1916, in the middle of the First World War. Edward Souter Barnsley registered his mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1887. His firm was based in Frederick Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and made a very wide range of silverware for the table, for domestic and for personal use. The company remained in business into the early 1920s.
Condition is very good with just a couple of very small shallow bruises to the lower part of the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 105 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot measures 18.2cm / 7.1ins from spout to handle, 7.2cm / 2.8ins across the body and stands 17.1cm / 6.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 354.3g / 12.5oz.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter r for 1916 and the E.S.B makers' mark for E.S. Barnsley & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
