George V Silver Salad Servers, Jos. Williams, 1913 George V Silver Salad Server %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a fine quality cased pair of George V Sterling Silver Salad Servers in the revived Hanoverian pattern. Hanoverian was the principal flatware pattern of the mid-18th century and is defined by its distinctive upturned end as at this time spoons and forks were laid on the table bowl and prongs down. The servers are elegantly engraved with a letter S on the underside of the stems, which would in the 18th century having been facing upward.

The salad servers are made in Bristol by Josiah Williams & Co and assayed in London in 1913. With a history going back to around 1818, the firm was the most successful manufacturing silversmith outside of the main centres of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. As Bristol did not have an assay office, the firm sent their pieces to first Exeter and later London to be assayed. They ceased trading at the start of the Second World War.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 110 years of good service. The box, which has the mark for high end retailer Carrington & Co of London's Regent Street, has a few minor scuff marks on the outside but the velvet and satin interior is in very nice condition and both the hinges and clasp are in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each piece measures 23.7cm / 9.3ins and the pair together weigh in at a very substantial 168.8g / 5.95oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1913 and the GJ over DF makers' mark for George Jackson and David Fullerton, who were the directors of Josiah Williams & Co at that time.

Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the salad servers.
