George V Silver Quaich, Francis Stebbings, 1920

This is a good size George V Sterling Silver Quaich or Porringer. The quaich is plain with broad flat handles on either side of the rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The quaich or porringer dates back to medieval times and is bowl shaped with one or two flat handles extending from the rim. Originally made in wood or pewter, over the years they have also been produced in glass, ceramic and silver. Quaich is the Scottish name for this type of bowl, where it is generally associated with whisky drinking.
This quaich is made in London by silversmith Francis Stebbings and dates to 1920. Francis Stebbings was the son of silversmith Robert Stebbings and inherited his father's business in Clerkenwell, London in 1913. Clerkenwell was the base for many silversmiths in the 19th and early 20th century.
Although the quaich has definitely been used, condition is generally good with just some very shallow bruising to the bowl, possibly inflicted after one too many whiskies.... Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The quaich is 14.2cm / 5.6ins from handle to handle, 9cm / 3.5ins across the top rim and stands 5.1cm / 2ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 90g / 3.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter e for 1920 and the F S in an oval makers' mark for Francis Stebbings.
