George V Silver Pepper Shaker, Mappin & Webb, 1917
This is a stylish and good quality George V Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The body is cylindrical with vertical pierced bands and holds its original blue glass liner, whilst the lid is domed and pierced for sprinkling ground pepper. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pepper shaker is made in Birmingham by Mappin & Webb, probably England's most famous silversmiths and dates to 1917, at the height of the First World War. Originally founded in 1810, the firm split into Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb in 1850 before being reunited under the Mappin & Webb name in 1902. They remain synonymous with quality and style to this day.
Condition is good with just one small ding in the lid and a little chip to the outside rim of the blue glass liner, which is invisible when it is inside the silver holder. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker stands 6.2cm / 2.4ins high and is 3.4cm / 1.3ins in diameter. Without the blue glass liner it weighs in at 34.9g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver and altogether weighs in at 76.9g / 2.7oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the base are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter s for 1917 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. In addition it has the Mappin & Webb Ltd retail stamp and the registered design number 524645 dating the original design to 1908/09.
