George V Silver Napkin Ring, Joseph Gloster, 1915
This is an attractive Cased George V Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The napkin ring is of capstan form with a band of floral engraving around the waist of the body to either side of a large blank cartouche. The box is burgundy coloured with a satin lining in the lid and a velvet lining holding the ring in place.
The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1915. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 105 years of good service. The hinge and clasp on the box are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The napkin ring is 4.4cm / 1.7ins in diameter and 3.1cm / 1.2ins deep. It weighs in (unboxed) at a respectable 21.9g / 0.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the body, are a little rubbed but still nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter q for 1915 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
