George V Silver Counter Bell, J & R Griffin, 1920
This is a charming George V Sterling Silver Counter Bell from the nineteen twenties. The bell is operated by twisting the knob on the top and produces a very pleasant ring. There are no initials, logo or personalisation of any kind. The base has a wooden insert, both for stability and to protect the surface it sits on.
The bell is made by well known silversmiths J & R Griffin and assayed in Chester in 1920. Founded by brothers Joseph & Richard Griffin around 1895, the firm was based in Birmingham but had virtually all of its pieces assayed in Chester. They ceased trading in 1926.
Condition is very good with just a couple of small dents in the base. Given this may have spent much of its life on the counter of a hotel, club, shop or bank, the condition is remarkably good. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The counter bell stands 8.2cm / 3.2ins high and is 7.6cm / 3ins in diameter. It weighs 154g / 5.4oz but this obviously includes the wooden insert in the base.
The hallmarks on the side of the base are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and 3 wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter U for 1920 and the J & R G makers' mark for J & R Griffin.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bell.
