George V Silver Cigarette Box, Alex Clark Co, 1924

This is a smart George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Box with a Cedar Wood lining. The box is square with a plain smooth lid and sides. The underside of the base has a thin leather covering.
The cigarette box was made in Birmingham by The Alexander Clark Co and dates to 1924. The firm was founded by Clift Alexander Mawer Clark in London in 1891. Originally just a retailer, the company moved into manufacturing in the mid-1890s. By the start of the First World War they had several retail sites in London and were also manufacturing in Sheffield and Birmingham. In 1912 they became the Alexander Clark Co Ltd. The firm diversified into luggage and travel goods alongside their silverware and silver plate and remained in business into the 1940s.
Condition is good, with just a couple of dings in the top right hand corner of the lid plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box measures 8.2cm / 3.2ins square and stands 3.2cm / 1.2ins high. It weighs in at 179.2g /6.32oz, which does of course include the cedar wood lining.
The hallmarks, on the side of the box, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1924 and the distinctive oval A C & Co Ld makers' mark for The Alexander Clark Co Ltd. The underside is also stamped with the retail mark Alex. Clark Co Ltd London.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
