George V Cased Silver Thimble, Charles Horner 1919
This is a lovely Cased George V Sterling Silver Thimble of GB size 8. The upper part of the thimble has a daisy pattern all around and there is a plain band around the bottom. The thimble comes in its original fitted red leather case with a velvet and satin lining.
The thimble was made by Charles Horner and assayed in Chester in 1919. Charles Horner established his firm in Halifax in the 1860s. They made exquisite antique jewellery and decorative silver items primarily for personal use and were at the height of their creativity during the Art Nouveau period. They were also prolific manufacturers of thimbles, both in solid silver and their own patented Dorcas thimbles, that were silver overlaid onto steel. The firm ceased trading in 1984.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents amd just the superficial wear that you would anticipate after 105 years of use. The case has a couple of tiny scuffs on it as you would expect but the hinge and the clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The thimble is a GB size 8. It stands 2cm high and is 1.7cm in diameter at the base. Unboxed it weighs in at 5.2g of solid Sterling Silver and all in it weighs 10.1g.
The hallmarks, around the bottom band, are a little rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester (this is the most polished away), the date letter T for 1919 and the C.H makers' mark for Charles Horner.
