George IV Silver Sugar Tongs, F. Higgins, 1830
Here we have a good quality large pair of George IV Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the classic Fiddle pattern. The tongs have no initials or personalisation of any kind. Although definitely sugar tongs these are large enough to use with ice cubes if desired.
The sugar tongs are made in London by celebrated silversmith Francis Higgins and date to the end of George IV's reign in 1830. Francis Higgins was an apprentice at Chawner & Co before setting up his own business in 1817. He was a highly skilled specialist spoon maker and a principal supplier to Hunt & Roskell, one of the most famous 19th century retail silversmiths. Chawner & Co would later come under the ownership of his family business.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and the just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 190 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 15.3cm / 6ins long and weigh in at a substantial 59.2g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the insides of the arms, are well struck and clear to read. The main set on one arm shows the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter p for 1830 and the George IV duty mark. On the other arm is the F.H makers' mark for Francis Higgins.
