George IV Silver Dessert Fork William Chawner 1823
![](http://images.antiquesatlas.com/b_sold.png)
![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
This is a very good quality George IV Sterling Silver Dessert Fork in the traditional Old English pattern. The fork is made in London by renowned silversmith William Chawner and dates to 1823. William Chawner was part of a famous dynasty of silversmiths and spoon makers from the interlinked Chawner-Eley-Fearn-Smith group of families who dominated English flatware from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s.
The dessert fork is a well-made piece in a good gauge of silver. It has no initials or personalisation of any kind.
Condition is good with only some superficial surface wear and a small amount of wear to the tips of the tines of the fork, which is to be expected in a fork from this period that has seen regular use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dessert fork is 15.7cm / 6.25" long and weighs a respectable 37.4g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read with the exception of the makers' mark, which is somewhat rubbed but still easily decipherable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "h" for 1823, the George IV duty mark and the WC makers' mark for William Chawner.
