George IV Silver Cream Ladle, Exeter, 1821 George IV Georgian Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a good quality George IV Sterling Silver Cream Ladle in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The ladle has the initials A W elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

Cream ladles are small ladles that were originally designed for use with the cream pails that were a common sight on Georgian dining antique tables. As cream pails went out of fashion, cream ladles ceased to be made. Today they are ideal for use with smaller containers for any kind of sauce or dressing.

The cream ladle was made by William Woodman of Bristol and assayed in Exeter in 1821. William Woodman was a Bristol silversmith who was in business between 1818 and 1838 and possibly a little earlier. Because Bristol didn’t have its own assay office, his work is all hallmarked in Exeter, the office for the south west of England. Woodman was a specialist spoon maker who occasionally produced other pieces but these are very rare. After his retirement in the late 1830s, his business was taken over by Robert Williams and would evolve into Josiah Williams & Co.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents, just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cream ladle is 13cm / 5.1ins long and weighs in at 15.9g / 0.56oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are clear to read with just some rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the Exeter date letter e for 1821, the George III duty mark and the W W makers' mark for William Woodman of Bristol.
