George III Silver Dessert Spoon, Hester Bateman
This is a well made George III Sterling Silver Dessert Spoon in the traditional Old English pattern. The spoon has the initial M engraved in 18th century style at the top of the stem.
The dessert spoon was made in London by famous silversmith Hester Bateman and dates to 1784. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company and founded a dynasty. Hester Bateman spoons are highly collectable.
Condition is good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 240 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 17cm / 6.7ins long and weighs in at a respectable 30.1g / 1.06oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are clear to read with the exception of the makers' mark which is quite rubbed but still identifiable. They show the lion passant for sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter II for 1784 and the distinctive cursive H B makers' mark for Hester Bateman.
