George III Silver Cream Jug, John Merry, 1789
Here we have an elegant George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug is broadly oval in shape with a rim foot and line decoration around the foot, the top rim and along the handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug is made in London by silversmith John Merry and dates to 1789. John Merry registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1782 and remained in business until around 1815. He was not a prolific maker and his mark is quite a rare one. It is most often seen on cream jugs.
Condition is good with just the superficial wear that has to be expected after over 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug measures 12.6cm / 4.9ins from lip to handle, 6.7cm / 2.6ins across and stands 9.7cm / 3.8ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 101.8g / 3.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the upper part of the body are a little rubbed but still nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter o for 1789, the George III duty mark and the I.M makers' mark for John Merry.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
