George III Exeter Silver Serving Spoon, 1795 Exeter Serving Spoons William Pearce %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a gorgeous George III Sterling Silver Serving Spoon in the Old English pattern with Bright Cut engraving down the stem. The spoon is made by William Pearce, assayed in Exeter and dates to 1795. William Pearce was a specialist silver spoon maker based in Plymouth who registered his mark in Exeter from 1774 to 1797. He died in 1806.

Bright Cut engraving came into fashion in the 1770s when new harder steel tools enabled the silver to be cut at an angle in order to catch the light and make the spoon sparkle. This spoon is a good example with an oval cartouche at the top of the stem, in which the initials "HR" have been neatly engraved. Below this is another oval cartouche with a starburst inside and then a zigzag pattern down the centre of the stem. It would make a fabulous gift or a great addition to any collection.

Condition is good with no splits and just a few tiny dings to the bowl along with the superficial surface wear you have to expect after 225 years of use! Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The serving spoon is 23.2cm / 9" long and weighs a substantial 54g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter "x" for 1795, the George III duty mark and the WP makers' mark for William Pearce.
