George II Silver Mug, John King, London, 1759
Here we have a smart George II Sterling Silver Mug. The mug has a low circular foot, a bulbous body and a scroll handle with an acanthus leaf top. The initials A C are incised on the underside of the base, so only visible when you pick the mug up.
The mug was made in London by John King and dates to 1759. John King registered his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1758 after becoming free of his apprenticeship. He produced cups, coffee pots, cream jugs and other tableware as well as flatware. He had a long career and remained active into the early 1790s.
Condition is good with just a small crease and a couple of very shallow bruises to the body. The foot has been a little flattened on one side giving the mug a very slight backwards lean towards the handle. Overall it has survived well for 265 years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mug measures 9.8cm / 3.8ins from lip to handle, 6.8cm / 2.7ins across the body and stands 9cm / 3.5ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 164.4g / 5.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter D for 1759 and the I K makers' mark for John King.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mug.
