French Empire Style Silver Gilt Hand Mirror c.1880
Here we have a very fine quality 19th Century French 950 Silver Gilt Empire Style Hand Mirror from around the 1880s. The mirror is round with a bevelled edge and set in a silver gilt mount with a wooden back. The handle features at winged female figure where it attaches to the mirror, an engraved stem and a finial featuring two lion's heads rising from an acanthus and flower motif.
The makers' mark has a little missing at the top but is most probably that of Alexandre Hoden who was active in the late 19th century.
Condition of the mirror is very good with no chips, cracks or deterioration of the silvering. Quite a bit of the gilding has worn off around the outer silver rim and on the stem of the silver handle after many years of handling and cleaning. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hand mirror is 16.2cm / 6.4ins long and 8cm / 3.1ins in diameter across the mirror section. It weighs 118.1g / 4.1oz.
As is standard with French silver of this period, there are two marks on the rim of the mirror. The first is the Minerva head mark which shows that it is 950 grade silver (95% pure as against Sterling which is 92.5% pure). The second is the makers' mark which shows the letters A and H to either side of a star, which is most probably that of Alexandre Hoden. In addition, both sides of the stem are stamped with the Minerva mark.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mirror.
