Edwardian Silver Toast Rack, Peter H. Deere, 1904
Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack with Attached Crumb Tray. The toast rack has classic Gothic arch dividers and a scalloped handle. The tray is boat shaped with the toast rack attached to the oblong central section. There is a pierced gallery all the way round and it stands on four bun feet.
The tray was made in London by Peter Henderson Deere and the toast rack in Sheffield by J & J Maxfield with both dating to 1904. The piece also has the retail stamp for Watherston of London and it seems likely that they commissioned the pieces from the two makers to create a unique item for their store as they are clearly designed to fit together.
Condition is good with just a small split in the pierced gallery on one corner plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack and tray is 17.6cm / 6.9ins wide, 9.2cm / 3.6ins deep and stands 11cm / 4.3ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 236.6g / 8.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
There are two sets of hallmarks, one on the tray and one on the toast rack. The tray has the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the London date letter II for 1904 and the P H D makers' mark for Peter Henderson Deere. The underside of the toast rack has the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Sheffield date letter m for 1904 and the J & J M Ld makers' mark for J & J Maxfield ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack and tray.
