Edwardian Silver Toast Rack, J. Sherwood, 1910
Here we have a good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver 4 Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack is on an oval base, which stands on four ball feet. The dividers are rounded arches whilst the finger ring handle is a circular twist.
The toast rack is made in Birmingham J. Sherwood & Sons and dates to 1910, the last year of the Edwardian era. Based at the Regent Works in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter, J. Sherwood & Sons was founded in the late 1850s and remained in business producing good quality silver tableware up until the start of the First World War.
Condition is good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of use. It stands securely on a flat surface. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 9.7cm / 3.8ins long, 7.3cm / 2.9ins across and stands 9.5cm / 3.7ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 99.3g / 3.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, at one end of the oval base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the J S & S in a shield makers' mark for J. Sherwood & Sons.
