Edwardian Silver Shell Salt Spoon, Atkin Bros 1909
This is a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the Old English Shell Pattern with a shell bowl. The bowl was originally gilded but some of the gilt has worn off, especially on the raised ribs of the shell. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salt spoon is made in Sheffield by the renowned silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1909. Henry Atkin became a partner in the Thomas Law family business in 1824 and after the retirement of Joseph Law he eventually took over the business in 1840. When Henry's three sons succeeded him the firm became Atkin Brothers and the name then stuck. The family was bought out during the Second World War but the name continued in use into the 1960s.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just some wear to the gilding in the bowl as mentioned above. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 7.4cm / 2.9ins long and weighs 6.8g / 0.24oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter r for 1909 and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
