Edwardian Silver Mustard Pot, Marcus Beaver, 1906
This is a fine Edwardian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot of oval form, complete with blue glass liner. The pot is marked for Marcus Beaver Ltd and assayed in Birmingham in 1906. Marcus Beaver was a jeweller and silversmith's store in St Ann Street, Manchester and most probably ordered the mustard pot from a manufacturer in Birmingham and had his sponsor's mark included as part of the assay. It is a rarely seen mark and examples are only known from the Edwardian era.
Reflecting the move away from Victorian excess, this is a very clean and simple design. The pot is oval with a curved rim at the top and a flat rim at the bottom. The thumb rest is plain and the handle is again of a simple elegant design. The pot comes complete with its blue glass liner and has no initials or personalisation of any kind engraved on it. It is entirely suitable for use or a modern dining table and would fit in with virtually any style.
Condition is very good with just a couple of truly miniscule dings on the side of the body and the superficial surface wear you would expect after 115 years of use. The blue glass liner has no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 3.6cm / 1.4" across, 5.9cm / 2.3" long, 7.5cm / 2.9" from rim to handle and stands 5.5cm / 2.1" tall at its highest point. It weighs 49g / 1.7oz without the blue glass liner and 101.9g / 3.59oz with the blue glass liner.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "g" for 1906 and the M.B sponsor's mark for Marcus Beaver Ltd.
