Edwardian Silver Mustard Pot, James Swann, 1902
This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original Blue Glass Liner. The oval mustard pot stands on four ball feet and has the body pierced in a scroll design around a central cartouche which is blank. The lid is domed with a turned finial and there is a c-shape handle.
The mustard pot is made in Birmingham by silversmith James Swann and dates to 1902. James Swann founded his business in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter in 1886 becoming James Swann & Son in 1922 and continuing on into the 1990s. They specialised in small pieces of silverware for the table, for sewing and for personal use, all of consistently good quality.
Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding in the upper rim and a little bit of sideways give in the hinge, which remains perfectly functional. The blue glass liner has no chips or cracks and overall there is just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot measures 7.1cm / 2.8ins from rim to handle, 4.1cm / 1.6ins across the body and stands 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs in at 31.9g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 69.0g / 2.4oz.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the body below the rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the J.S makers' mark for James Swann.
