Dutch Silver Portrait Spoon-Hollandia-Zutphen-1928
This is a good quality Dutch 833 Silver Spoon featuring an embossed portrait in the bowl. The portrait is of a lady in historic Dutch costume and is probably a reproduction of an Old Dutch Master painting as is frequently the case with flatware from the Netherlands. The stem of the spoon is decorated in an old Roman style and the finial has a badge with a tower and is surmounted by a crown.
The spoon is made in Zutphen by the Hollandia Zilversmederij and dates to 1928. Hollandia was set up in 1917 by Bernardus Warnerus van Eldik III, a descendant of a long line of silversmiths, and his business partner Adolph Frederik van der Scheer. They were quickly successful and remained in business until the death of van Eldik in 1949, which led to the the works being closed down in 1950.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and very few signs of wear. It seems most likely that this spoon has been kept as a souvenir or keepsake and had little or no use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 13.5cm / 5.3ins long and weighs a very respectable 19.6g / 0.69oz of solid silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the bowl are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant facing right above the number 2 for Dutch 833 / 1000 grade silver, the date letter S for 1928 and the distinctive BWE makers' mark for Bernardus Warnerus van Eldik of Hollandia Zilversmederij.
