Cut Glass Vanity Pot w/ Chester Silver Lid, 1917
This is a good quality George V Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver lid, which is gilded on the inside. The dressing table pot is sarcophagus shaped with hobnail cut decoration around the sides and star cut decoration on the base. The silver lid is plain and has no initials or personalisation of any kind, making this ideal as a gift.
The dressing table pot is made by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1917. The Chester assay office was closed down in 1962 and the Chester assay mark is much sought after by collectors as it is less common than the big English offices in London, Birmingham & Sheffield.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a couple of truly miniscule dings in the silver lid plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. The gilding on the inside is in good condition with just a small amount of wear in one corner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dressing table pot is 9.5cm / 3.7ins long, 4.5cm / 1.8ins wide and 3cm / 1.2ins high. All in it weighs 141.2g / 4.9oz with the silver lid by itself weighing 9.6g / 0.3oz.
The hallmarks on the top of the lid are clear to read with the exception of the makers' mark which is somewhat rubbed but still decipherable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & 3 wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter R for 1917 and the JD over WD in a shield makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
