Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl, G'smiths & S'smiths, 1902
Here we have a top quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl set. The jug and bowl are in the Georgian Revival style, which was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are broadly oval in shape, stand on four ball feet and have a raised central band around the body. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug and sugar bowl are made in London by the renowned firm The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company and date to 1902. The company was founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Longman at premises in London's prestigious Regent Street. They quickly established a reputation for silverware of the very highest quality. They remained in business until they were merged with Garrard & Co in 1952.
Condition is very good with just a tiny dent in one of the ball feet on the cream jug plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 10.5cm / 4.1ins from lip to handle, 5.6cm / 2.2ins across and stands 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. The sugar bowl is 12.9cm / 5.1ins from handle to handle, 6.3cm / 2.5ins across and stands 6.6cm / 2.6ins high. The two items together weigh in at a substantial 134.0g / 4.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the sides of the bodies of each piece, are a little rubbed for long years of cleaning but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1902 and the distinctive G & S Co Ld makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
