Cased Set Of Silver Salts & Spoons, 1911
This is a very fine pair of George V Sterling Silver Salts & Spoons in their original case. The salts and spoons are made in Birmingham by E.S. Barnsley & Co and date to 1911. The box is branded inside for the retailer W. Greenwell of Sunderland. Edward Souter Barnsley opened his business in Frederick Street, Birmingham around 1887 and produced a broad range of good quality silverware up until the early 1920s.
Many salts and spoons have become separated over the course of time so it is always good to have a pair of matching sets, especially in their original box. The salts stand on four feet and have a scalloped rim. The blue glass liners are in good condition with no chips or cracks. The salt spoons are in the Old English pattern.
Overall condition is very good with no dings or dents and just superficial surface wear. There is a small amount of salt corrosion where salt has been trapped between the glass liners and the silver (always clean your salts thoroughly after use!) but nothing of significance. The box is in generally good condition with a small bash at the bottom on the left hand side and some very minor scuffing, nothing you wouldn't expect after over 100 years of use. The set is completely suitable for use on a table today or would make a great addition to a collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salts are 5.4cm wide, 3.8cm deep and 2.8cm high. The spoons are 5.6cm long. The weight of silver is 57.9g. The full set including glass liners and box weighs in at 330g.
The hallmarks are on the side of the salts and the underside of the stems of the spoons. They are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "m" for 1911 and the E.S.B makers' mark for E.S. Barnsley & Co.
