C19th Georgian Large Bronze Pestle & Mortar
This lovely antique pestle and mortar looks to date from the early nineteenth century, although it may be earlier. The bowl is very heavy and we believe it to be made from bronze. The pestle is also heavy, but has a lighter-coloured finish and this may be brass. The pieces are of a similar age, but we cannot be sure that they have always been together (although they came to us together). There are no maker's marks.
Condition: Overall in good condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some surface knocking and wear as might be expected and the bowl has some loss of definition where it has been polished over the years. The bowl has some fracturing in the surface of the outside near the bottom, but these cracks are not structually significant. The interior of the bowl is grubby, and there is some tarnishing and minor surface corrosion in places. The mortar has some heavy knocking and surface wear as might be expected. We are not sure whether the pieces are original to each other.
The approx. measurements are as follows:
Bowl - 13cm high, 16cm diameter of top.
Mortar - 20cm long. Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
