Stunning and unusual bronze plaque by Auguste Moreau, one of the leading members of the famous family of sculptors 19 th and early 20th centuries.
"Minerva" was the Roman Goddess of Wisdom She was born from the godhead of Jupiter with weapons. From the 2nd century BC onwards, the Romans equated her with the Greek goddess Athena. She was the virgin goddess of music, poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, and magic. She is often depicted with her sacred creature, an owl usually named as the "owl of Minerva", which symbolises wisdom. Beautifully cast and fabulous patina, a very striking and unusual bronze. Dimensions 50 cm x 35 cm. Weight 10kg.Signed bottom right A.Moreau.
