Britannia English Silver Tumbler Cup Jubilee 2012
A superb English Britannia standard silver gilt Whisky Tumbler Cup complete with the original fitted presentation case.
This lovely item is made from Britannia silver, a higher grade of silver than the more common sterling silver.
Britannia silver was originally introduced in 1697 because sterling silver coins were being melted by silversmiths for use, thus causing a shortage of coins. In England, an Act of Parliament was passed stating that after 26 March 1697 silver must be made of the higher Britannia grade. Sterling silver was reintroduced from 1 June 1720, and thereafter Britannia silver has remained an optional standard for hallmarking in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The tumbler is hallmarked with the maker's mark FH for Francis Howard, 958 and Britannia for Britannia standard silver, the Sheffield rose town mark and date letter N for 2012. Also the optional Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee mark.
It measures approximately 60mm in diameter, 45mm in height and the weight is 88.7g.
A really nice item, it would make an excellent gift. Great for someone to enjoy a dram of whisky (or gin, vodka, rum) on a special occasion. Specialists in Antique Pocket Watches & Vintage Wristwatches, Jewellery, Silver (including Scottish Provincial),Good Quality Antiques & Works of Art.
